Cargèse

Cargèse, a Greek village in Corsica

If you seek a destination that provides unforgettable experiences and awe-inspiring landscapes, then the village of Cargèse in Corsica is an ideal selection. This extraordinary Corsican settlement is situated 5 kilometers north of Capizzolu residence and boasts a breathtaking view of the ocean. Here, you can not only appreciate the allure of this location but also explore two remarkable structures. Two churches stand opposite each other, overlooking the quaint harbor and cemetery. The Latin Church (Catholic) and the Greek Church (Orthodox) present a harmonious contrast between two places of worship from different traditions.

Cargèse (Corsican: Carghjese) is a town with a Greek influence

The tale of Cargèse is truly captivating. On March 14, 1676, three galleys from Genoa arrived, bringing with them 600 Greek refugees who established themselves in Paomia on the island of Corsica. In 1729, amidst a widespread insurrection by the Corsicans against Genoa, these Greek settlers were forced to leave. To compensate for their lost properties in Paomia, they were granted the region of Cargèse in 1774. It was here that they founded the town of Cargèse as we recognize it today.

These two churches are a remarkable symbol of the coexistence of two different cultures.

Although the village itself is quite compact, the municipality of Cargèse extends widely and encompasses several magnificent beaches. The beaches of Cargèse are all beautiful in their own way and will provide you with unforgettable memories. Clear water, fine sand, and breathtaking landscapes - take your time to relax and wander. While you can choose between refreshing swims or invigorating dives, you should enjoy the salty outdoor air to recover. It's up to you to choose the beach of your choice. So why not try them all? The beaches of Chiuni and Peru are located above Cargèse, while the beaches of Menasina, Capizzolu, and Stagnoli are located south of the village.

Le sauveur, a monument dedicated to the Greeks of Cargèse, at Capizzolu beach.

Must see

Cargèse has more attractions to offer than just its beaches. To learn more about the history of the place, it is recommended to take a look at the Greek-Catholic and Roman Catholic (Latin) church. Another cultural attraction is the Dolmen of Paomia, which can be reached on a hike.

A trek to the Genoese towers of Omigna and Puntiglione is an experience that cannot be missed. These towers stand as testaments to Corsica's vibrant history and provide breathtaking views of the sea and the adjacent scenery. Wander through the narrow streets and take pleasure in the diverse viewpoints of the ocean. Explore the nearby maritime setting and the harbor. You'll find numerous chances to shop, unwind in cafes and eateries, and savor local seafood along with Corsican delicacies.

In Cargèse, you are bound to have a memorable experience. Dive into the rich culture and fascinating history of this extraordinary location while taking in the stunning beauty of the nearby scenery. Transform your upcoming holiday into an unforgettable adventure by exploring the Greek village of Cargèse in Corsica.

Located just 7 kilometers from our redidence Capizzolu, you'll find the coastal destination of Sagone.

Sagone

Sagone is situated just behind an expansive sandy shoreline that remains uncrowded, even in peak tourist season. The village boasts a solid infrastructure, featuring suppliers of water sports gear, dining establishments, and various retail outlets.

Sagone lacks a true center, primarily because malaria-carrying mosquitoes that thrived along the river of the same name once plagued the region. It was only after these pests were completely eliminated in the mid-20th century that sustainable settlement became possible. Concurrently, tourism began to flourish in the area.

The Romans had previously established a settlement in this area. In the 9th century, the Saracens took control of Sagone. Under the influence of the Pisans, the village became the seat of the bishopric for the Sagone diocese. Presently, visitors can still observe the remnants of the ancient cathedral of Sant'Appiano located to the west of the village, which dates back to the 12th century. A menhir statue was incorporated into its construction and remains visible today in a horizontal orientation. During archaeological digs, the foundations of a basilica from the 4th and 5th centuries were uncovered.

Although Sagone has a rich history, there are no remarkable monuments in the town. In the Middle Ages, the episcopal seat was transferred to Vico inland in 1572.

However, Sagone offers a relaxed atmosphere and an idyllic seaside location. The beach is not crowded even in high season and the town offers everything one needs for a pleasant vacation.

Traveling with your canine companion in Corsica: holiday lodging on the sandy shores of Capizzolu.

Traveling with your dog in Corsica

At the Les Mandiles residence, four-legged friends are welcome! There is a veterinary practice located 7 km away in Sagone.

Flying with your dog

If you're planning on traveling with your dog, it's important to realize that transport can often be stressful for your pet. If you still decide to fly, be sure to check with the airline regarding their policies on bringing dogs. Some airlines allow small dogs to travel in a carrier in the passenger cabin, while larger dogs must be transported in a specially designed crate in the cargo hold.

Ferry with your dog

Your furry friend is sure to enjoy the trip to Corsica by ferry. However, there are various ferry connections from the French or Italian mainland that handle pet transport differently. Some companies allow pets to travel on board, while others only allow them to be housed in personal cabins or special kennel areas. It is recommended to book passage with all providers early, as the number of available pet accommodations in cabins is limited during peak season.

Dog-Friendly Beach Outing

While many popular beaches prohibit dogs during the busy season, there isn't a universal rule in place. As a result, nothing should hinder a fun-filled day by the water. Nonetheless, it's wise to steer clear of crowded beaches since various municipalities enforce differing regulations. If you and your canine companion are in search of a tranquil and private shoreline, Capizzolu Beach, accessible by foot from Les Mandiles, offers an ideal setting for a serene escape.
